70歲陳姓婦人在10多年前曾接受傳統腰椎手術，但近5年逐漸開始感到背痛，核磁共振檢查雖顯示腰椎沒有復發神經壓迫，但下背痛的情況始終無法緩解，長期依賴止痛藥，求診中醫大學新竹附設醫院，骨科醫師陳冠融做X光及臨床診斷為「腰椎術後疼痛症候群」，經過醫病溝通後，以射頻熱凝療法非侵入性治療，陳婦隔日就出院，並感覺背痛終於緩解。

陳冠融表示，陳婦曾接受過傳統腰背部手術，但下背痛並無改善，或又再次為腰背疼痛所困擾，是腰椎術後疼痛症候群的典型表現。

陳婦的腰背由於無法習慣脊椎固定後的力學狀態，或者固定處的上下節又衍生關節炎，可能會導致間歇或持續的背痛，痛感有時甚至超過手術前，上述症狀發生率可高達40％。

陳冠融指目前已知風險因子包含肥胖、抽菸、憂鬱都可能促成腰椎術後疼痛症候群，建議可以藉由術前術後的戒菸、減重、和適度運動達到預防。
