一名60歲女子被檢查出罹患食道癌末期，同時合併肺部、肝臟轉移，預期活不過半年。進一步探究罹病原因，醫師從家屬描述才得知，原來患者有許多不良的生活習慣，像是久坐看電視、飲酒、常吃醃製醬菜、重複加熱過鹹的菜肉湯、喝燙口的湯等，這些全都是致癌的危險因子。
腎臟科醫師洪永祥在個人粉專發文表示，該女子起初因吞嚥困難，嚥下食物常有卡在咽喉或胸部的感覺，於是選擇改吃較軟或流質的食物，但後來甚至連稀飯也難以吞嚥，只能進食流體食物。一直到她半年內體重掉了8公斤，人非常虛弱、疲勞才趕緊就醫至腸胃科檢查，結果照了胃鏡後，最終診斷為食道癌末期，且已轉移到肺部、肝臟，由於發現太晚，預期壽命只剩不到半年。
至於女子罹癌原因為何？洪永祥說，根據家屬描述，病人因先生過世、孩子也都獨立在外，這10年來每天都坐在電視機前看一整天，且喜歡邊看電視邊飲酒，並搭配醃製醬菜或重複烹煮很鹹的菜肉湯，來當作下酒菜；此外，其也非常喜歡喝很燙的湯，習慣把湯加到非常熱。洪就提到，當時收治的腫瘤科醫師聽完就搖頭嘆，這麼多致癌習慣難怪會罹癌。
藉由此個案，洪永祥提醒，很多人都知道抽煙、喝酒、嚼檳榔是毫無懸念的「致癌三兄弟」，務必要戒除，但生活中還有不少具罹癌風險的生活習慣，卻往往被民眾所忽略，例如喜歡喝燙口熱湯、保麗龍碗裝泡麵、愛吃烤焦食物、睡覺不關燈、經常做電腦斷層檢查、不喜歡刷牙漱口、經常裝潢住家與買新櫥櫃、嗜吃加工紅肉、久坐，以及吃太甜太鹹，都值得特別注意。
洪永祥表示，在臨床期前，癌症有一個漫長的潛伏期，從正常細胞演變成癌細胞，異常增生、癌前病變，再到形成可見的癌症約莫10～20年。當患者處於癌症潛伏期，只要有意識地改善生活習慣、飲食結構、運動習慣，增強抗癌免疫力，便可逆轉或阻止癌變；反之，若有一個會導致癌症的不良習慣卻完全不自知，長久下來就會把癌細胞養出來。
